SPELD PD Workshop - Working Memory and Behaviour

Next Friday 28th October, SPELD NSW are hosting a professional development workshop at City Beach Function Centre in Wollongong on Working Memory and Behaviour - two topics of high relevance to schools, led by two highly regarded speakers:

  • Understanding Working Memory and Its Implications for Learning - Mimma Mason
  • Managing disturbed and disturbing behaviour in the classroom - Ian Luscombe

Silvereye will have a resource display at the workshop open from 8.15 am - 3.30 pm with a broad array of resources focussed on working memory, learning difficulties and behaviour management.

Workshop Summary

The morning workshop with Mimma Mason, will look at why working memory impairments are associated with a wide range of developmental disorders of learning including ADHD, Dyslexia, Specific Language Impairment, and reading and mathematical difficulties. The discussion will include:

  • how to assess working memory; and
  • practical strategies for managing children and adolescents with working memory difficulties.

The afternoon workshop with Ian Luscombe will be a fun, entertaining, inspiring and practical seminar which will provide teachers with "ready to use" strategies for managing many of the difficult behaviours (with 20% new content). Highlights include:

  • the 3 major strategies for managing disruptive behaviour;
  • how to talk to students with an emotional disturbance;
  • dealing with non-compliance; and
  • what to say when you dont know what to say!

About the Speakers

Mimma Mason has worked for the past 15 years with Clinicians, Educators, Coaches and Workplace Health professionals using an integrative approach to raise awareness of brain health. She has been a regular speaker on the topic of neuroplasticity and how knowledge of the brain can help us to be better teachers, managers and coaches.

Ian Luscombe was in Special Education for over 28 years and for 14 years was Principal of Redbank School, Westmead: a special school for the treatment of children (preschool to Yr 6) and adolescents (Yrs 7 to12) with emotional, psychiatric and / or behavioural disorders. Ian has been a mentor to aspiring and established principals and a trainer and coach in PBIS (Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports). Ian is in high demand as a speaker and has spoken extensively across Australia (conferences, schools, universities, NSW parliament house) on practical behaviour management strategies.
